2-minute self-check

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most healthy adults with missing teeth are candidates. Providers mainly check three things: enough jawbone, healthy gums, and health that supports healing. Even bone loss or gum disease usually don't rule implants out, they change the plan.

This self-check is informational only, not a diagnosis, and makes no promises about your outcome. We're an independent guide, not a dental office. Only a provider exam with imaging can confirm candidacy.

What providers actually check

The three things that matter

Enough jawbone

The implant needs bone to anchor into. Thin bone doesn't mean "no", a graft or sinus lift can rebuild it first.

Healthy gums

Active gum disease is usually treated before placement. Once it's controlled, implants are often back on the table.

Health that heals

Uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can complicate healing and planning, but frequently don't rule implants out.

Your quick read

The 2-minute candidacy check

Are you missing one or more teeth (or expecting to lose one)?
Have you been told you have significant jawbone loss?
Do you have active, untreated gum disease?
Do you have uncontrolled diabetes or another condition affecting healing?
Do you currently smoke heavily?

This tool gives a general, educational read on factors that affect candidacy. It stores nothing and is not medical advice.

What happens if you're a candidate

Most cases follow the same four stages, knowing them up front makes the timeline, and the quote, easier to read.

The typical implant journey: an exam and plan, implant placement, a healing period while the implant fuses to the bone (osseointegration), then the final crown or bridge. Timing varies by case.
Told you don't have enough bone?

That rarely means "no." A provider can often rebuild the ridge with a bone graft, or add height in the upper jaw with a sinus lift, before placing the implant. It adds time and cost, but it's routine and opens implants back up for many people.

When there is not enough bone to anchor an implant, a bone graft rebuilds the ridge, or a sinus lift adds height in the upper jaw, before the implant is placed. This is a common reason a full plan costs more than a headline price.

Candidacy FAQ

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Most healthy adults with one or more missing teeth are candidates. Providers look at whether you have enough jawbone to anchor the implant, healthy gums, and overall health that supports healing. Factors like bone loss, gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or heavy smoking can complicate planning but often do not rule implants out.

Can I get implants if I have bone loss?

Often yes. When there is not enough bone, a provider may recommend a bone graft or sinus lift first, or use techniques designed for reduced bone. This is one of the most common reasons for an exam and 3D imaging before quoting.

Are same-day dental implants real?

Same-day or "immediate load" approaches place implants and a temporary set of teeth in one visit for suitable candidates, with the final teeth added after healing. Whether you qualify depends on your bone and case, so treat "same day" as a possibility to ask about, not a guarantee.
